北海道、本州、四国、九州及び伊豆諸島に分布し、中国からも知られている。頭部が細長く、成虫背に沿って背方に強く膨らむ。触角第7節と8節はほぼ融合する。Holothrips属に近縁だが、触角第4節に4本の感覚錐を持つことで区別できる(Holothrips属では3本)。琉球列島(沖縄島、石垣島)には近縁種O. nigripesが生息する。主に枯れ枝に住むが、キクイムシの坑道などから発見されることが多い。食菌性。
